General questions about Torres del Paine

What is the difference between the W and O Trek?

The "O" Trek encompasses the "W" Trek, with the former being an extension of the latter. The W Circuit covers approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) and typically takes between 4 and 5 days to complete. In contrast, the O Circuit spans about 110 kilometers (68 miles) and, due to its increased difficulty, usually takes 8 to 9 days to complete. The highest point of the O circuit is at 1,200 meters above sea level, while in the W circuit, the maximum altitude reaches 850 meters above sea level.

The W Trek highlights iconic spots such as Grey, Cuernos, French Valley, and Base Torres. The difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging, with some steep ascents, but the trails are generally well-maintained.

The O Trek is a circular route that includes all of the W Trek's highlights, plus additional trails on the eastern side of the park, offering a more remote and less crowded experience. Key areas include Base Torres, Seron, Dickson, Perros, El Paso John Gardner, and Grey. The difficulty is considered more challenging due to the longer distances and some rugged terrain.

While the W Trek is shorter and more accessible, making it ideal for those with limited time who still want to experience the park's main attractions, the O Trek is better suited for experienced hikers seeking a more immersive and challenging adventure.
