Frequently Asked Questions about Patagonia

General questions about Torres del Paine

Is it better to do the W trekking route from east to west or from west to east?

Both directions—west to east and east to west—offer unique experiences when hiking in Torres del Paine. The only factor that could affect your enjoyment is the prevailing wind, which is often from the west. Therefore, trekking west to east means that the wind will be at your back, making it a bit more comfortable.

Many hikers prefer starting from the east and heading west, making this the more traditional route. This direction allows you to begin with the most challenging hike, Base Torres, which offers stunning views but requires a steep ascent. On the other hand, starting in the west at Paine Grande or Grey and hiking eastward can be less crowded, offering a more serene experience. However, this direction can also bring stronger winds, especially in the open areas near Grey Glacier. It’s ideal if you want to save the Towers for the grand finale, with the most iconic views coming at the end of your trek.
