Early Morning Hike to Base Torres - Self-Guided Program

This self-guided itinerary is designed for adventurers who wish to explore Torres del Paine at their own pace. It includes a detailed plan with estimated times to help you organize your journey. While the times are approximate, we recommend following them to ensure you can catch the scheduled transports. If at any point you feel that your pace won't allow you to meet the times or experience physical difficulties that slow you down, it's advisable to stop and return to the Welcome Center. Remember, each section of the trail offers spectacular views, so simply being in the heart of Torres del Paine gives you the opportunity to enjoy the majestic, ancient mountains.
06:45 - Departure from Arturo Prat 86, Puerto Natales.
It is recommended to arrive at least 15-20 minutes early, as departure must be on time to ensure timely arrival at the catamaran.
NOTE: For a hiking day in Torres del Paine, it is essential to dress in layers to adapt to temperature changes. It is recommended to wear a moisture-wicking technical base layer, followed by an insulating mid-layer such as a fleece or light jacket, and a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Don’t forget to wear comfortable and durable pants, trekking boots with good support and waterproofing, and a hat or beanie to protect against sun and wind. Also, bring gloves, a scarf, sunscreen, and sunglasses to be prepared for any weather conditions. It’s important to carry a daypack to store your personal items and box lunch, as this program does not include meals.
08:15 - Arrival at Laguna Amarga Entrance.
At this stop, you will need to present your park entry ticket to the rangers. Since you will already have your ticket, simply show the QR code. Remember that there is no phone signal in the park, so we recommend keeping your tickets on your phone as screenshots or, if preferred, printing them to avoid any issues. Afterward, return to the transfer to continue the journey to the Welcome Center.
08:45 - Arrival at the Welcome Center.
This location has public restrooms and a minimarket, and it is also the starting point for the hike to Base Torres. We recommend taking advantage of this space to prepare, as the next and only available bathroom is located in Sector Chileno.
09:00 - Start of the hike uphill to Sector Chileno.
The distance from the Welcome Center to Sector Chileno is 6 kilometers, which translates to about 2 hours of hiking. This marks the beginning of one of the most iconic trails in Torres del Paine. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, but soon you'll begin a steep ascent that requires considerable physical effort. As you hike uphill, you will gradually enter a breathtaking landscape surrounded by mountains and accompanied by the sound of a nearby river.
Along the way, you’ll find separate trails for hikers and horses. It’s important to follow the hikers trail, as it is safer and has fewer rocks. The horse trail is used for horseback rides and supplies transport, so it must remain clear.
Further ahead, you will reach an iconic point on the trail known as “Paso de los Vientos”. From there, you will be closer to reaching Sector Chileno, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break.
11:30 - Arrival at Sector Chileno.
Upon arrival at Sector Chileno, you will have noticed how the vegetation gradually transformed as you advanced. Now you find yourself in the heart of the mountains, surrounded by ancient forests and towering mountains. This sector, located 412 meters above sea level, is the ideal spot to rest, enjoy a hot drink, use the restrooms, take photos of the stunning scenery, and prepare for the second and final section of the hike.
This point of the hike is crucial, as being almost halfway to Base Torres, you will have the chance to assess whether your physical capacity has allowed you to reach this point without issues. It’s important to remember that the estimated times should be respected to ensure you return on time. If you feel overly tired or experience any pain that might delay the itinerary, we recommend staying here, enjoying the beauty of the forest and mountains, and returning to the Welcome Center. Keep in mind that the second part of the hike will be more demanding, so it is essential to be in full physical condition to continue to the viewpoint.
12:00 - Start of the uphill hike to Mirador Base Torres.
Leaving the campsite Chileno, you will enter a lenga forest marking the beginning of the hike to Mirador Base Torres. This stretch is 4.4 km long and is estimated to take between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. It is a challenging trail, mostly uphill, and is considered one of the most iconic routes in Chilean Patagonia and perhaps the most popular within Torres del Paine National Park.
The hike begins with moderate ascents and descents through lenga forest. Then, the final stage begins: the ascent up the moraine, located at 700 meters above sea level. At this point, the trail becomes steeper and more demanding. Initially, you will walk on an eroded path with exposed rocks and tree roots, under the shade of small trees that line the moraine. This section requires patience and care both on the ascent and descent.
As you progress, the marked trail fades, and you’ll need to continue ascending among large rocks, some of which are marked to guide you. After steady effort, the majestic Torres del Paine will rise before you at 860 meters above sea level. Upon reaching the viewpoint, you will have reached your goal, enjoying an unforgettable view of these iconic granite formations.
14:00 - Arrival at Mirador Base Torres.
At this viewpoint, you will reach the edge of the lagoon, where you will have a privileged view of the towering Torres del Paine: Central, Monzino, and D'Agostini. You’ll also be able to admire the Peineta and Nido de Cóndores hills, completing this spectacular landscape. This is the moment when you’ll feel that all the effort of the hike was worth it, as you marvel at the grandeur of nature.
14:00 - 14:30 - Time to have lunch at the viewpoint.
You’ll have half an hour to enjoy lunch in this extraordinary and unique setting, facing the majestic and ancient granite towers.
14:30 - Return hike to Sector Chileno.
We begin the return journey along the same trail back to the starting point. As you descend the moraine, remember that this section requires patience and caution, as both the ascent and descent can be challenging due to the uneven terrain.
16:30 - Arrival at Sector Chileno.
A 15-minute break is scheduled at Sector Chileno for you to use the restroom, take some photos, and enjoy a snack before continuing with the descent.
16:45 - Return hike to the Welcome Center.
Start the return journey to the Welcome Center. As it is a well-marked trail, and you are familiar with the route from the ascent, this section will be easier. Be sure to respect the recommended times to ensure you arrive on time for your transportation.
19:00 - Arrival at the Welcome Center.
Upon arrival at the Welcome Center, you will have time to use the restroom and, if you wish, purchase snacks and drinks at the minimarket. If you have time, you can relax and enjoy a hot drink or a toast to celebrate this wonderful day. Remember that the transfer has a scheduled departure, so we recommend notifying the driver that you have arrived and are waiting at the Welcome Center to confirm your arrival.
19:30 - Transfer back to Puerto Natales.
